The number of Americans convinced that President Barack Obama is a Muslim is increasing.
Polls suggest that between a fifth and a quarter of Americans are mistaken about his religious faith.
According to a survey of 3003 people by Pew Research, about 18% said the President was a Muslim, up from 11% in March 2009.
Among Republicans, that number was 34%. Only a third of those questioned correctly identified Mr Obama as Christian.
The BBC reports the polling was done before 13 August, when Mr Obama defended the right of Muslims to build an Islamic centre by Ground Zero, the site of the bombed World Trade Center.
