NZ face tough quarterfinal against South Africa

New Zealand are into the quarterfinals of the Wellington leg of the IRB Sevens series after beating Australia 26-19 on Friday night.

The New Zealanders finished at the top of their pool on day one at Westpac Stadium but must play South Africa on Saturday to survive after the series leaders were upset by Kenya, losing 17-22.

The South Africans finished second in their pool, setting up a tough quarterfinal against New Zealand on Saturday.

After beating Samoa, Fiji will meet England in the quarters despite an early upset to USA.

The American side will take on Argentina in the quarterfinals.

In other pool games on Friday, New Zealand lost their first outing against Wales 17-28 after they were reduced to five players for much of the match, but easily defeated Niue 43-7.
