About 150 fishermen have been rescued from a big ice floe in Lake Erie after it broke off from the shore.

A Coast Guard spokesman said one person fell through the ice and died on the way to a hospital on Saturday.

Another man who fell through the ice was not injured.

Boats and helicopters were used by the Coast Guard in a four-hour operation.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said the ice broke shortly after 10:30am EST (1530 GMT). The temperature in the area was around 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Coast Guard says the slab of ice was about 13km wide. The BBC reports ice on Lake Erie has been described as particularly thick this winter.
