A Peruvian film won the Golden Bear award for best picture at the Berlin film festival on Saturday.
Festival organisers said The Milk of Sorrow (La Teta Asustada) was the first Peruvian film to feature in the main competition lineup.
The Silver Bear jury grand prix award, was shared between Gigante, an Uruguayan drama, and Everyone Else (Germany).
Other awards went to: best director Asghar Farhadi of Iran for About Elly (Darbareye Elly); best actress Birgit Minichmayr of Austria for Everyone Else; and best actor Sotigui Kouyate of Mali for London River.
