Firemen want state action against Pacific Brands

8:25 am on 2 March 2009

New South Wales firefighters say Pacific Brands should lose its contract to produce their uniforms if it refuses to back down on big job cuts.

Officials from the Fire Brigade Employees Union are to meet the company on Monday to discuss if uniforms will continue to be produced in Australia.

Firefighter uniforms and safety equipment for emergency services and defence personnel are made by two subsidiaries of the company.

There are fears Pacific Brands intends to move its production offshore to compete with cheap Chinese-made imports.

The union says the NSW state government should use other Australian producers if the company refuses to back down on plans to cut 1200 manufacturing jobs and 650 other jobs over the next 18 months.

At least 430 jobs in New Zealand are understood to be affected.
