A post-mortem has confirmed British actress Natasha Richardson died from an accidental blow to the head, after a ski accident.

New York's medical examiner said on Thursday that Richardson, 45, died from an accidental "blunt impact to the head."

Richardson fell while learning to ski in Canada on Monday and became gravely ill soon after.

She was taken to a New York hospital where she died on Wednesday.

Richardson was the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and wife of actor Liam Neeson. They had two sons.

Theatres on Broadway said they would dim their lights for a minute of mourning on Thursday evening.

Richardson won a Tony Award in the 1998 revival of Cabaret.
