Deportation of alleged Nazi guard suspended

9:30 am on 5 April 2009

A judge in the United States has suspended an order to deport an alleged former Nazi concentration camp guard, two days before he was due to be extradited to Germany.

John Demjanjuk, 89, is wanted there on charges of being an accessory to the murder of thousands of Jews in a Nazi concentration camp in Poland during the Second World War.

Mr Demjanjuk denies the charges.

His son, John Demjanjuk junior, says his father's poor health would make a fair trial impossible.
