2:48 pm on 12 April 2009

Prison officers in riot gear have regained control of a low-security British prison nearly 24 hours after hundreds of inmates rioted and set fire to buildings.

The Prison Service said on Saturday that three prisoners were slightly injured but no guards were hurt in the riot at Ashwell prison near Oakham, about 160km north of London.

Television pictures show there has been extensive damage to prison buildings.

The riot began early on Saturday and involved up to 300 prisoners.

The Prison Service says about 420 prisoners have been moved to other prisons and around 180 remain at Ashwell.
