An Egyptian child has contracted the bird flu virus after coming into contact with infected birds.

Her case is the latest in a growing spate of infections in Egypt, where 66 people have now been infected with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Fifteen of these cases have been since the start of the year.

Egypt has been hit harder by bird flu than any other country outside Asia. Twenty three people have died after contracting the bird flu virus.

The girl, aged 18 months, is from the north Egyptian province of Kafr el-Sheikh. Citing the health ministry, state news agency MENA reported she was being treated with the antiviral drug Tamiflu.
