9:25 pm on 25 April 2009

A New Zealander has been arrested in the Philippines.

The man, identified only by the surname of Newman, was arrested with six former Philippine navy staff who are suspects in a mutiny in 2003.

The Inquirer news service in the Philippines says the six former navy staff were being trained as VIP security when they were arrested.

Chief superintendent Leon de la Cruz says authorities are checking if the six were involved in a short-lived uprising in Makati City, near Manila.

Mr de la Cruz says the New Zealander's involvement in the uprising is not known and he has been arrested on immigration charges.
