The car driver who sought to ram the Dutch royal family but killed six onlookers has died from his injuries.

His car rammed into the foot of a monument after mowing down people gathered for the annual Queen's Day royal procession in the city of Apeldoorn, about 90 kilometres east of Amsterdam.

Karst Tates, 38, was critically injured during his attempted attack on the Dutch royal family and died of severe head trauma.

He had raced his car towards an open-top bus carrying Queen Beatrix and her family at a parade, missing the bus by metres before slamming at high speed into a stone monument.

Police said they believed the driver acted alone.

"What started as a beautiful day has ended in terrible drama, which has shocked us deeply," Queen Beatrix, 71, said in a brief address after the incident, having cancelled further official festivities.

Princess Maxima, wife of heir Willem-Alexander, and Beatrix's other sons were also in the open-top bus which was heading to a palace in Apeldoorn.

The Dutch royal family usually visits a community on Queen's Day, a major annual holiday when citizens flood out on to city streets and canals in spring weather.
