UK cabinet minister attacks Labour's 'failure'

After a week of increasing criticism of the British prime minister, Gordon Brown, one of his own cabinet ministers has said the government is "lamentably" failing to get its message across.

Writing in the Sunday newspaper, The Observer, Communities Secretary Hazel Blears says many British people no longer believed the government's policy announcements.

And she says use of "new media" by politicians is not as effective as traditional campaigning methods.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has launched an online version of Prime Minister's Questions, pledging to respond to videoclip questions submitted via the Downing Street YouTube website.

Earlier this week Gordon Brown was attacked for his handling of changes to the controversial system of MP's expenses and some senior Labour figures have started to openly question his government's performance.
