Only pig in Afghanistan in quarantine

11:59 am on 8 May 2009

The only known pig in Afghanistan is in quarantine because of fears over swine flu.

Khanzir was a gift from China in 2002 and lives at the Kabul Zoo. It is a curiosity in a country where pork products are illegal.

However, he was moved into isolation after visitors expressed fears he could be carrying the H1N1 virus.

Zoo director Aziz Gul Saqib says the pig is strong and healthy.

He says it has been moved because Afghan people don't have a lot of knowledge about swine flu and get worried when they see it.
