First Hispanic judge tipped for US Supreme Court

United States President Barack Obama has nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.

If the position is confirmed by the Senate, she will become the first Hispanic person to take up the position and only the third woman in the court's history.

Analysts say the pick will prove a smart choice politically if it helps attract Hispanic voters to the Democratic Party.

However the decision is likely to generate a sharp political battle in the Senate over Sonia Sotomayor's liberal positions.

Hispanic groups have predictably welcomed the selection.
