An Indonesian man is expected to appear at the Darwin Magistrates Court on Monday charged with smuggling asylum seekers aboard a boat that later exploded.

Australian Federal Police say he was a crew member on a boat carrying 47 asylum seekers that was stopped by the Australian Navy last month.

Five people were killed when the boat, known as SIEV 36, exploded near Ashmore Reef while being escorted by the Australian Navy to Christmas Island.

The ABC reports three people remain in the burns units at Perth and Brisbane hospitals.
