More time for submissions on political reform in Tonga

A Constitutional and Electoral Commission in Tonga is to allow another four weeks for submissions on political reform.

The commission began consulting with the people in January about the nature of changes that should be made as Tonga embraces a greater level of democracy.

An interim report has been issued. It makes no recommendations, but points out the key issues the country still needs to debate.

Radio New Zealand International reports it says the sorts of changes Tonga is considering typically slowly evolve, but the Kingdom faces profound change if a desire for elections next year is to be met.

The commission is now giving people until 5 July to make more written submissions. Its final report is due by 5 November.
