Three die as Indonesian forces retake Papua air strip

11:01 am on 8 June 2009

At least three people were killed after an Indonesian anti-terror unit stormed an isolated airstrip occupied for about two weeks by a group of unidentified gunmen in Papua province.

Police in Papua say several police officers also suffered serious wounds after being attacked by bows and arrows.

Local media reports say the group is linked to the secessionist Free Papua Movement and had occupied the airstrip in the Kasepo sub-district for about a fortnight.
