New rules outlined for British MPs

The British government has proposed new legislation to clean up parliament, following a scandal over MPs expenses.

The Parliamentary Standards Bill creates new criminal offences to be policed by a full-time parliamentary investigator.

The BBC reports MPs who break the rules could face up to a year in prison.

The bill would also put their code of conduct on a statutory footing for the first time and make MPs declare all outside earnings.

It follows public anger over expenses claims made by MPs between 2004 - 2008 which have been disclosed by The Daily Telegraph newspaper.
