Shooting aboard Royal Navy submarine

9:09 am on 9 April 2011

A Royal Navy crewman is under arrest after a shooting aboard a nuclear-powered submarine in Britain.

The shooting happened at midday on Friday while HMS Astute was in dock in Southampton. A navy crewman was killed and another was seriously wounded.

Police and the Ministry of Defence say the incident is not terrorist related.

The mayor of Southampton and other dignitaries were on board at the time of the incident, but were not hurt.

Eleven children were on the quayside waiting to board the submarine.

The 7,500-tonne vessel was commissioned into the Navy last August. It does not carry nuclear weapons.

HMS Astute has been berthed in Southampton since Wednesday on a five-day official visit.

It ran aground on a shingle bank between the Scottish mainland and the Isle of Skye in October last year and remained marooned for several hours.
