French drug manufacturer Sanofi-Aventis has begun large-scale production of a vaccine for swine flu at its facilities in the United States and France.

The company says production of the vaccine for the new H1N1 flu, which has caused a global pandemic, will use conventional egg-based vaccine technology.

Dosage requirements for the vaccine will be based on clinical trials expected to take place in the next few months, it says.

Worldwide, there have been more than 56,000 confirmed cases of swine flu, 249 of them fatal.
