Spring storms and tornados have left 22 people dead in southern states of the United States.

Four deaths were reported in North Carolina, while Alabama and Arkansas each reported seven deaths, there were two in Oklahoma, one in Mississippi and one in storm-related wildfires in Texas reports the BBC.

The storm toppled trees and power lines, tore roofs off houses and scattered articulated trucks across highways.

The entire Washington DC metropolitan area was put under tornado watch on Sunday, as were counties in Virginia and Maryland.
