Italian gas train toll rises

2:50 pm on 2 July 2009

Two children badly burned when a train carrying liquid petroleum gas exploded as it passed through a town in northern Italy have died of their injuries, taking the death toll to 16.

Officials say they both had burns on 90% of their bodies. At least a dozen other people remain in a critical condition.

The collision happened on Monday night in the northern town of Viareggio, when the train jumped the tracks and exploded.

Transport Minister Altero Matteoli told parliament on Wednesday that axle failure on an LPG wagon caused the disaster.

Fire crews are still working to clear the remaining wagons of their cargo. Six of the 13 remaining wagons had been safely unloaded by Wednesday morning.
