Ugandan politician 'blocked' from returning home

Colleagues of a prominent Ugandan opposition politician say he has been blocked from boarding a plane in Kenya to return home.

Kizza Besigye was President Yoweri Museveni's main opponent in February's election. Mr Museveni is to be sworn in on Thursday for a fourth term.

Dr Besigye has been in Kenya undergoing medical treatment for injuries received during a violent arrest on 28 April.

His car was attacked during a demonstration in Kampala and he was doused in pepper spray and suffered injuries to his eyes, the BBC reports.

Dr Besigye's colleagues say he was about to board the plane in Nairobi when an official from Kenya Airways stopped him.

Ugandan authorities had apparently said the plane would not be allowed to land if Dr Besigye was on board.

On the streets of Entebbe and along the route to Kampala there is a very heavy deployment of well-armed police.

The BBC reports the government is worried that Dr Besigye's return might lead to his supporters gathering in large numbers.

The opposition has led protests over rising food and fuel prices.
