Thousands of giant squid washing up on beaches

8:12 pm on 17 July 2009

Thousands of giant Humboldt squid are being washed up on the beaches of San Diego in California.

The sea creatures, normally found in deep waters off Mexico, can grow up to 1.5 metres long and weigh as much as 45 kg.

Scientists say a shortage of food or global warming may explain why the creatures are swarming off the southern Californian coast.

There are so many in the shallow waters off the coast of San Diego that they're scraing divers away.
