Drilling rig protesters arrested

Police from Greenland have arrested 18 Greenpeace members who climbed an offshore oil rig to protest at deepwater drilling in Arctic waters.

They say the protesters came from several countries.

Greenpeace says the rig's operator, Cairn Energy of Scotland, is not taking enough precautions to avoid incidents like last year's oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

Cairn announced this week that it had begun drilling two wells in the region.

The BBC reports the two wells are approximately 160km and 300km off Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. Each is in water deeper than 900 metres.
