Detained medics appear in Bahrain court

6:35 pm on 7 June 2011

Doctors and nurses in Bahrain who treated injured anti-government protesters earlier this year have appeared in court charged with attempting to topple the monarchy.

Forty-seven clinicians appeared behind closed doors in a special security court in Manama.

The BBC reports they had been held in detention since March, when Bahrain declared an emergency law, which was lifted last week.

Only select journalists are allowed to cover the latest trials inside a special security court.

More than 20 people were killed during a government campaign to stifle the demonstrations.

Two people have been sentenced to death for their part in the protests. Four died in police custody.
