26 passengers hurt by turbulence on flight

At least 26 people were injured when a Continental Airlines jet flying from Rio de Janeiro to Houston hit extreme turbulence and made an emergency landing in Miami.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says Continental Flight 128 was cruising at 11,600m when it hit extreme turbulence about 80km north of the Dominican Republic at about 0830 GMT on Monday.

Passengers reported a sudden drop that threw some people against the roof.

Four of those hurt have serious injuries.
