More men charged over alleged terror plot

11:54 am on 5 August 2009

Three men alleged to have plotted a suicide shoot-out at an Australian army base have been charged with terrorism offences.

The men were arrested on Tuesday after pre-dawn raids on 19 properties across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Another man, Nayef El Sayed from Glenroy in Melbourne's north, has already been charged and appeared in court on Tuesday.

He was charged with conspiring to prepare an attack on the Holsworthy military base in Sydney, which police say was to be a suicide shoot-out with automatic weapons.

A fifth man who was in custody before the raids were carried out is expected to be charged later on Wednesday.

Police say the latest three men to be charged are accused of the same offence as Nayef El Sayed and will appear in court on Wednesday.

Review of military security

As a result of the raids, Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd has ordered an enquiry into security at military bases.

The review will consider whether the practice of using private security firms to guard military installations is suitable.

Mr Rudd says the defence force chief has advised federal cabinet's national security committee that based on current knowledge, security arrangements are adequate.

However he says he wants to be assured security at each base is in order.
