Bolt clips 100m record to 9.58 seconds

Triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt of Jamaica has smashed his own 100 metres world record with a time of 9.58 seconds to win the world championship final in Berlin.

American Tyson Gay, the 2007 champion, clocked 9.71 to take silver and Jamaican Asafa Powell took the bronze.

Bolt made a near-perfect start, grabbing the lead after only 20 metres and storming to the line.

He blew kisses to the crowd and hugged his friend Powell, a former world champion, roared on by 70,000 cheering fans.

His peformance in Berlin beat the 9.69-second time he set to win a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
