The News International phone hacking scandal is spreading to the United States.

News Corp's British operation will be the subject of a judicial inquiry following evidence of widespread phone and computer hacking, and accusations that News of the World journalists bribed police officers.

The BBC reports four United States senators are calling for an American investigation too, in the belief that News Corp journalists may have hacked into the voicemail messages of victims of the 9/11 attacks.

News Corp owns the The Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, Fox television stations and Fox News in the US.
