Turtles in trouble in Queensland

3:28 pm on 22 July 2011

Turtles in North Queensland are in trouble and experts across Australia are trying to find out why.

Sick, lethargic and sometimes dead sea turtles have been washing up on the beaches over the past few months.

The ABC reports that experts suspect events such as Cyclone Yasi have destroyed large tracts of essential seagrass.

Barbara Gibbs, who lives on Magnetic Island off the coast of Townsville, says she has come across 20 turtles suffering in the same way over the past two months.

Marine and environment agencies say there has been a 700% increase in the number of turtle strandings in north Queensland compared with last year.
