Samoa prepares for left-hand drive rule

3:12 pm on 7 September 2009

As Samoa switches from driving on the right hand side of the road to the left, a three-day alcohol ban is being planned and authorities are giving demonstrations to motorists.

The government has declared public holidays and launched a major public awareness campaign to educate drivers about the switch.

Media are covering demonstrations on the new rule by fire and emergency crews and broadcasters will inform people of the change-over at 6am on Monday (local time).

The temporary ban on alcohol sales will not apply to diners at restaurants and bars, but nightclubs will be closed.

Police have started using breathalyser devices to check drivers after a law was passed recently to legalise their use.
