Hunt continues for suspected rioters

10:10 pm on 12 August 2011

British police are hunting down suspected rioters as Prime Minister David Cameron unveiled what he says are tough new measures to end the country's worst riots in decades.

Five people have died as a result of the riots, scores of others have been injured and many buildings have been looted and burned.

More than 1500 arrests have been made since the unrest began last Saturday following the police shooting of a man in the north London borough of Tottenham on 4 August.

Scotland Yard says it has arrested at least 1000 people in London alone and 584 have been charged. Courts in the capital, Manchester and the Midlands town of Solihull are staying open 24 hours a day to fast-track those in custody.

Courts also sat late into the evening in Birmingham and Manchester.

Those arrested including a millionaire's daughter, a charity worker and a woman who handed herself in after suffering pangs of guilt.
