A passenger train carrying up to 100 passengers was derailed near Melbourne on Saturday night, injuring three people.

The ABC reports the train was travelling on the Melbourne -Warrnambool line when it hit a fallen pine tree at about 9pm (AEST).

The front two carriages, carrying only the drivers, fell on their side, but the other three carriages remained upright.

The train's two drivers and a woman believed to be in her 60s were taken to Camperdown Hospital with minor injuries.
