9:02 pm on 13 September 2009

A fire at a clinic for drug addicts has killed 38 people in the Central Asian state of Kazakhstan.

The Emergency Ministry says workers rescued another 40 people in the early morning fire in the city of Taldykorgan, near Kazakhstan's business capital Almaty.

The cause of the fire is not known.

The facility is one of many state-run healthcare institutions offering treatment and counselling to drug addicts in the former Soviet republic, which lies on the main drug trafficking route from Afghanistan to Western Europe.
