Researchers in the Netherlands have been able to shed more light on how combat experience changes the brains of soldiers.
Two years ago, Dutch scientists found that soldiers returning from Afghanistan initially had heightened activity in the part of the brain that processes fear.
The ABC reports further research has now found that the brain activity of those soldiers returned to normal after 18 months.
But the scientists say that does not mean the soldiers' brains as a whole, returned to the way they were.
