Irish paramilitary group renounces violence

11:16 am on 12 October 2009

A prominent Irish republican paramilitary group has renounced violence.

The Irish National Liberation Army says it will now pursue its objectives of an united Ireland by peaceful means.

A statement, issued through its political wing, the Irish Republican Socialist Party, did not mention weapons decommissioning, but it's understood talks have begun.

The INLA has been on ceasefire for 11 years.
