Campaign to stop Mubarak's son from succeeding him

7:33 pm on 15 October 2009

A coalition of opposition groups in Egypt has launched a campaign to block President Hosni Mubarak's son, Gamal, from taking over as president.

The campaign, called "Who gave you the right?", is led by Ayman Nour, the man who unsuccessfully challenged President Mubarak in the 2005 presidential election.

It includes members of the Kefaya movement, which organising anti-regime demonstrations in 2005, and the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest and most organised opposition movement.

Gamal Mubarak is widely seen as the political heir apparent to his father, who has been in power since 1981. The next presidential election is due in 2011.
