Easter Island residents vote to restrict immigration

The inhabitants of Easter Island have voted overwhelmingly to restrict immigration because of fears of over-population.

Four thousand people live on the remote island off the coast of Chile, which measures just 32km from one end to the other, the BBC reports.

The government of Chile, which administers Easter Island, says residents are struggling to cope with the 50,000 tourists who visit each year to see the famous stone statues.

More than 90% of those who voted in a referendum at the weekend say they are worried about an influx of residents from Chile, who have moved there to work in hotels and bars, and as taxi drivers.
