Child dead, two missing after bridge collapses

One child drowned and two others are missing after a group of Malaysian children plunged into a river when a suspension bridge they were crossing collapsed, according to police.

The children were part of a group of nearly 300 pupils from several dozen primary schools on a camping trip north of the capital Kuala Lumpur, Reuters reports.

Nineteen others initially feared to be missing are safe.

District police chief Superintendent Aziz said more than 300 rescue staff were combing the river to search for the missing children on Tuesday.

State news agency Bernama reported that the 50-metre bridge was completed two weeks ago to replace an earlier suspension bridge that also collapsed.
