Archbishop of Canterbury in Zimbabwe

6:03 am on 10 October 2011

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has delivered a sermon in Zimbabwe as part of an African tour to try to heal divisions within the Anglican Church.

Dr Williams presided over an open-air Eucharist in the national sports stadium in Harare on Sunday. More than 15,000 people attended.

The BBC reports the service was moved to the stadium after the Anglican cathedral in the city was taken over by a renegade bishop.

The Church in Zimbabwe has been divided since 2007 over the ordination of gay priests and the policies of Zimbabwe's government.

Dr Williams has asked to meet President Robert Mugabe.
