Political crisis in Hondura resolved

11:18 pm on 31 October 2009

After weeks of international pressure and negotiations, an end is in sight to the political crisis in Honduras.

Both ousted president Manuel Zelaya and the interim leader, Roberto Micheletti, have welcomed an agreement that would allow the reinstatement of Mr Zelaya.

He was ousted in a military coup on 28 June. Critics said he was seeking to amend the constitution to remove the current one-term limit on serving as president, and pave the way for his re-election.

There have been ongoing protests both within the country and internationally, against the coup.

The BBC reports the Congress of Honduras still has to approve the agreement.

Mr Zelaya returned covertly to Tegucigalpa on 21 September and has been staying in the Brazilian embassy. His term of office is due to finish at the end of January.

Mr Zelaya says he is optimistic about the deal, which would create a power-sharing government.

Presidential elections due on 29 November would also go ahead.
