11:39 pm on 2 December 2009

The former first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos, has registered as a candidate in next year's elections.

The BBC reports the 80-year-old widow of former president Ferdinand Marcos will run in the Marcos stronghold of Ilocos Norte.

The seat is being vacated by her son, Ferdinand Marcos Jnr, otherwise known as Bongbong, who has filed his candidacy for the senate.

Earlier the outgoing president of the Philippines, Gloria Arroyo, filed her papers to run for Congress after she steps down next June.
