Settlers protest over West Bank housing suspension

1:19 pm on 10 December 2009

Several thousand Jewish settlers have protested outside the official residence of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu against a suspension of further settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.

They accused Mr Netanyahu of giving in to United States pressure to halt new residential building for 10 months.

The US says Israel's decision will help move forward peace efforts.

Mr Netanyahu has said the restrictions apply only to the construction of new homes, and any work currently under way will continue.

The settlements on occupied Palestinian land are illegal under international law.
