North Korea willing to resume nuclear talks

5:01 pm on 11 December 2009

President Barack Obama's envoy to North Korea has returned from his first visit to the country with no new commitments on nuclear weapons.

The envoy, Stephen Bosworth, says however that he reached a common understanding on the need to resume negotiations.

Washington wants Pyongyang to return to the stalled six-party talks aimed at the denuclearisation of the Korea peninsula.

Mr Bosworth says the visit was useful, while the North Korean state news agency said that the two sides had agreed on the need to resume the talks, and that North Korea would continue working with the United States to narrow their differences over the nuclear programme.
