Up to 100 people may have died when a runaway truck ploughed into a crowded market in Nigeria.

Officials say 55 people died, but the BBC says its reporter at the scene, in the Dekina area in Kogi state, counted at least 100 corpses.

Kogi police say the truck hurtled down a hill, smashing cars and motorcycles then crashing into the market.

Up to 40 people were injured.

Kogi state governor, Ibrahim Idris, declared three days of mourning.
