Ninety airline passengers are being treated for injuries after a plane crash-landed in Jamaica.

American Airlines Flight AA331 was carrying 154 passengers when it overshot the runway in heavy rain late on Tuesday. The flight originated in Washington DC.

The BBC reports the Boeing 737 hit an embankment causing the landing gear and engines to detach. It stopped three to five metres short of the Caribbean sea.

The injured were treated for broken bones, cuts and bruises.
