Defence personnel overseas

12:10 pm on 25 December 2009

More than 500 New Zealand Defence personnel are celebrating Christmas Day away from home.

They're deployed in 10 countries on peacekeeping operations, United Nations missions and defence exercises.

Each soldier will receive an RSA Christmas hamper containing tomato sauce, chippies, gingernuts, anzac biscuits, onion dip ingredients, marmite, toothpaste and chewing gum.

For those in Sudan and Afghanistan, Friday is largely just another working day, although they'll have a special lunch and a Christmas service.

The soldiers say they will use Skype technology to contact families back in New Zealand.
