President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela suggests people should end what he calls the insanity of giving gifts at Christmas, and concentrate instead on reading their children stories about the country's independence hero, Simon Bolivar.
He says mothers and fathers are practically forced into buying toys, and should reject that pressure.
Mr Cahvez says it's time to put the breaks on "consumerist, capitalist insanity" which is leading people to "lose their spiritual values".
