Toodyay residents return home after bushfire destruction

7:13 pm on 31 December 2009

Dozens of Toodyay residents are returning to their homes for the first time since a bushfire ripped through the Western Australian town, destroying 38 homes.

Residents who lost their homes are hoping to salvage some of their belongings while others are concerned for animals, which have been without water for two days.

Police believe the fire, which started on Tuesday afternoon and burned through 3,000 hectares of bush and farmland, was caused by a fallen power pole.

Western Power says an independent inspector will be visiting the area, 85km north-east of Perth, on Saturday.
